National Nutrition Week: What happens due to deficiency of vitamin 'K' in the body? Know treatment, symptoms, prevention

New Delhi, September 7 (IANS). Vitamins are very important for keeping our body healthy. We can fulfill our daily vitamin requirements with a balanced diet. If there is a deficiency of vitamins in the body, we start facing many problems.

Among these vitamins, vitamin K is one such vitamin which people often pay very little attention to. In the beginning, there is no major effect of the deficiency of this vitamin. But gradually vitamin K starts showing many major effects in our body.

Vitamin K plays an important role in blood clotting. Its deficiency can cause excessive bleeding in case of a wound in our body. Other symptoms of vitamin K deficiency include nose bleeding, bleeding from gums, weakening of bones due to reduced bone density in the body and weakening of the intestines.

Dr. Amit Kumar, who runs ‘Shatayu Ayurveda and Panchkarma Center’ in Hardoi, says that vitamin K is very important for our body. It is very important for body functioning, especially for liver functioning, but often people ignore the importance of this important vitamin.

He further says, “If we look at the damages caused to our body due to the deficiency of this vitamin, then the deficiency of ‘Vitamin K’ can cause many major damages to our body. Among these, heart, liver, gums, blood clotting, irregular menstruation in women are the most important.”

He further added, “The most important of the K vitamins are vitamin K1 and K2. Vitamin K1 is found in green leafy vegetables and greens. Vitamin K2 is a vitamin that is mainly derived from meat, cheese and eggs and is synthesized by bacteria. This vitamin keeps liver cells healthy and protects against cirrhosis, besides protecting heart cells from many types of dangers. It is very important for the body in many ways.”

However, maintaining the right amount of vitamin K in the body is not a big challenge. You can maintain the right amount of this important vitamin in your body by including some nutrients in your diet.

On this, Dr. Amit says, “Maintaining the right amount of vitamin K in the body is not a big challenge. Your daily diet almost fulfills the daily requirement of both vitamins K1 and K2. But people whose diet is disturbed face problems.”

Dr. Amit further says, “Mustard greens, wheat and barley flour, radish, beetroot, red chillies, meat, eggs, fruits, sprouted grains and green leafy vegetables are such things included in a person’s daily routine, which contain both the components of vitamin ‘K’, ‘K1’ and ‘K2’ in abundance. People can maintain the level of vitamin ‘K’ in the body by consuming these things.”
