Stockholm, October 9 (IANS). The names of the Nobel Prize winners for the year 2024 in the field of Chemistry have been announced. This time three scientists will be given the Nobel Prize. These include two scientists of Google DeepMind, Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper, and Professor David Baker of Washington University.

Scientists have won this prestigious award for their research on protein design and structure. The academy said the Nobel Prize amount of 11 million Swedish kronor will be divided equally among the three scientists.

“The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be awarded in two parts, one of which will be awarded to David Baker for ‘Computational Protein…’ for ‘Design’ and the other half will be awarded to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper for ‘Protein Structure Prediction’.

Let us tell you that Demis Hassabis is currently the CEO of Google DeepMind in the UK and Jumper is a senior research scientist at Google DeepMind. At the same time, Baker has achieved the impossible feat in creating ‘protein structure’. Hassabis and Jumper have developed an AI model to solve the 50-year-old problem of predicting complex structures of proteins.

Chairman of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, Heiner Linke, said, “One of the discoveries recognized this year concerns the creation of spectacular proteins. The other is about fulfilling a 50-year-old dream. Both of these discoveries have broad possibilities.”

Baker succeeded in using 20 amino acids to design a new protein. Since then, his research team has created a series of imaginative proteins, including proteins that could be used as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nanomaterials, and tiny sensors.
