Number of medical colleges increased by 780 and MBBS seats increased to 1,18,137: Center

New Delhi, December 7 (IANS). Medical education in India has witnessed significant growth in the last 10 years. The ‘Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’ told the Rajya Sabha that the number of medical colleges was 387 in 2013-14, which has doubled to 780 in 2024-25. There has been an increase of 102 percent.

During 2013-14 to 2024-25, MBBS seats also increased from 51,348 to 1,18,137, an increase of 130 per cent.

The highest increase in the number of medical colleges was recorded in Uttar Pradesh. The state now has 86 medical colleges, up from 30 in 2014. Uttar Pradesh is also at the forefront in terms of maximum increase in medical seats. There were 3,749 seats in the year 2014, which has now increased to 12,425 seats.

The number of medical colleges in Maharashtra increased from 44 to 80. The state has also increased its MBBS seat capacity to 11,845 from 5,590 a decade ago. Telangana, which had no medical colleges in 2014, now has 65. At the same time, there are now 9,040 MBBS seats in the state.

In addition, one medical college each has been established in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Mizoram and Nagaland. These states and union territories (UTs) had no medical colleges in 2013–14. A significant increase was also seen in Rajasthan. The number of colleges in the state increased from 10 colleges with 1,750 seats in 2013-14 to 43 colleges with 6,475 seats in 2024-25.

In Madhya Pradesh, the number of colleges increased from 12 colleges (1,700 seats) to 31 colleges (5,200 seats), while in Chhattisgarh, the number of colleges increased from five colleges (600 seats) to 16 colleges (2,455 seats). Three more colleges were added in Delhi, increasing the number of medical colleges from seven to 10. While MBBS seats increased from 900 to 1,497. The number of medical colleges in Karnataka increased from 46 to 73, while MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu increased from 6,215 to 12,050.

Meanwhile, the ministry informed the Lok Sabha that a total of 90,794 posts are sanctioned for medical colleges in the country.
