New Delhi, November 1 (IANS). IANS had a special conversation with Dr. Sandeep Nair, Principal Director of Black-Max Super Specialty Hospital and Head of the Chest and Respiratory Diseases Department, regarding the increasing pollution in the country’s capital Delhi. He said that every year around Diwali and during the change of season, pollution levels increase, resulting in respiratory problems in many people.
Dr. Nair told IANS that recently in some areas the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 700, which is very dangerous. AQI should be between 50 to 60, but reaching AQI up to 700 has a serious impact on our health. He also said that pollution especially affects children and senior citizens more, as their immunity is weaker than the youth.
He advised people to avoid going out during times of pollution, especially when there is a lot of dust. Pollution can enter the lungs and spread to other parts of the body through the blood, which can cause serious health problems.
He said ways to avoid this include good hydration and eating a nutritious diet. If a person is taking medicines for blood pressure or respiratory problems, he should take them regularly and also take care of water and good nutrition. He also stressed on wearing masks, especially for those who already have lung problems. Covid-19 has taught us the habit of wearing masks. N95 masks can prove helpful in protecting against harmful particles.
He said that pollution not only causes respiratory problems, but it can also have a negative impact on the heart and kidneys. It can affect all organs, causing problems like headache. Dr Nair appealed to people to take necessary precautions for their safety and use public transport as much as possible. These measures are very important to avoid pollution.
