Rajasthan: Bird flu virus found in dead stork, other species of birds also in danger

Jaipur, December 21 (IANS). Bird flu has spread in Phalodi district of Rajasthan. Bird flu virus has been confirmed in Kurjan, who was found dead in Kheechan village of the district.

Viscera samples were sent to the High Security Animal Disease Lab in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on December 19. The virus was confirmed in the test report on December 21. The confirmation of the virus has raised concerns within the local administration and the forest department, as the virus could pose a threat to other bird species as well. So far, seven cranes have died due to infection in Kheechan area.

Collector HL Atal has instructed all concerned departments to remain alert. A joint meeting was called with representatives of animal husbandry, forest, police, industry and medical and health departments, urging officials to implement preventive measures, protect the public and conduct surveys to monitor the spread of the disease.

The Animal Husbandry Department has formed a Rapid Response Team and the Forest Department has deployed monitoring and survey teams. Vigilant monitoring is being done in areas where storks rest and roost. Local officials have also appealed to the people to avoid going to areas where cranes migrate.

As per the order of the Collector, a team of forest workers has been deployed at the resting places of Kurjan birds.
