Kolkata, October 13 (IANS). The fast unto death of junior doctors continued for the ninth day in protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R.G.Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The number of junior doctors sitting on hunger strike on the stage at Esplanade in central Kolkata has now come down to seven. Anustup Mukhopadhyay, one of the striking doctors, had to be admitted to hospital after his health deteriorated due to continuous hunger. Let us tell you that he had to be admitted after complaining of severe stomach pain and blood in the stool.
Meanwhile, mass resignations of senior doctors from various state-run medical colleges and hospitals continued on Sunday. 77 senior doctors attached to the College of Medicine and JNM Hospital, Kalyani in Nadia district submitted their mass resignation through email to the registrar of the institute.
In the email, senior doctors have claimed that the recent developments on the issue have left them mentally broken and fearing wrong treatment, hence they have decided to tender mass resignation.
Over the past few days, more than 300 senior doctors, including members of the medical-academic fraternity, have submitted mass resignations from various state-run medical colleges and hospitals, including doctors from JNM.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Subhendu Adhikari, has called for a boycott of the annual Durga idol immersion ceremony organized by the state government, which is scheduled to take place on October 15 this year.
The official said, “Durga Puja was organized this year. But the usual festive atmosphere was missing. Even during Durga Puja, there were protests on the issue of rape and murder. Therefore, I appeal to the people to boycott the carnival this year to send a message to the administration.
Responding to Adhikari’s comments, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh said the carnival aims to showcase the rich heritage of West Bengal on Durga Puja.
