Seafood is spreading resistance to antibiotics 'colistin': Study

New York, 22 June (IANS). American scientists have recently expressed a major concern. He has told that the antibiotics used as a very important and last treatment are no longer affecting many cases. The reason for this is that some bacteria have also become resistant to this medicine (not affecting the disease fighting drugs).

Worldwide, resistance to colistin is spreading, causing treatment options decreasing and infected people are at greater risk. Researchers at the University of Georgia have recently identified a way that colistin resistance genes are spreading.

In a new study, microbiologist Ismat Kasem and his group researched the imported shrimp and bacteria found in scallops purchased from 8 food markets around Atlanta. These foods contain bacteria in which colistine resistant genes were present.

Choleistine is given only when all other medicines stop working. It is used only in very serious and fatal infections. But now this medicine is also not able to work many times, due to which the options of treatment are getting further reduced and the risk of people’s lives is increasing.

Scientist Ismat Kasem and his team also said that these resistant genes can easily spread bacteria to bacteria. These genes are in part of a small DNA called plasmid, which can reach from one bacteria to another.

Kasem said, “Many people do not know that most seafood eaten in the US is imported, including about 90 percent of the shrimp. Their examination does not detect antimicrobial resistance genes.” Kasem and his group also found that these genes are in part of a small DNA called Plasmid, which can reach from one bacteria to another.

Choleistine was started to treat severe infections in the 1950s, but its side effects such as kidney and nerve damage were shut down in the US in 1980. But when the rest of the drugs started being neutralized, it was reused.

The World Health Organization has also included colistin in “very important” drugs, as this is the last treatment for many serious infections.

Scientists have warned that they have found this resistant gene from just one source, but may have more sources and this problem may spread further.
