Belgrade, 27 December (IANS). A new case of mpox was reported in Serbia on Friday in a 30-year-old man who recently returned from West Africa. According to the regional public health institute, the first case of mpox has been confirmed in the Kosovo region.
The institute said that the patient was admitted to the hospital on December 24. Symptoms like fever, chills and skin lesions on the face and hands were found in the patient. His condition is stable.
The institute said that people who came in contact with the patient are being traced and infection control guidelines have been issued to prevent possible infection.
Serbia confirmed its first Mpox case in June 2022.
The World Health Organization continues to declare a public health emergency over the Mpox outbreak, Xinhua news agency reported.
In August the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said that more cases of mpox would likely be reported in Europe, but that the likelihood of sustained infection in Europe remained very low.
According to the latest ECDC report released this month, four mpox cases were reported in Germany on 15 December, while the first case of mpox was confirmed in a single person on 18 December.
Mpox is an infectious disease. It may cause symptoms like rash, fever, headache, muscle pain, back pain and fatigue.
MPox is caused by monkeypox virus (MPXV). Mpox is spread mainly from person to person through close contact with an infected person. The disease is spread through skin-to-skin contact (such as touching or sexual activity). It can also spread through face-to-face interactions, where breathing or talking close to each other can spread infectious particles from one person to another.
