New Delhi, 24 May (IANS). For the tribal communities of India, Tendufuffal is not just a wild fruit, but a symbol of their culture, livelihood and identity. Tendufuffal, called ‘green gold’ and its leaves hold an economic, social and culturally special place in the lives of tribals.
With new initiatives from the government and non-governmental organizations, this ‘Tendufal’ is becoming a strong medium to empower tribal communities financially. Recently, the collection of tendufuffal and its leaves in states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha has economically empowered tribal communities.
This year, about 4,500 tribal families have got employment in Korba district of Chhattisgarh. The government has increased the price of tendu leaf to Rs 5,500 per standard sack, which is earning a family up to Rs 1,500 per day. Leopard and leaves are collected mostly women. This year, Madhya Pradesh had more than 60 percent of the collection of collection work, which is a major step towards economic freedom.
Tendufuffal is used in religious rituals in tribal communities, such as Gond, Baiga and Korku. It is considered to be the ‘blessing of the forest deity’ and in many festivals it is offered as offerings. The tribals believe that Tendu leaf is not a normal leaf of a tree for them, but for them is the offerings of God.
Tendufuffal is abundant vitamin C, iron and antioxidants, which are helpful in fighting malnutrition. Local Vaidyas use it to treat stomach diseases, diarrhea and skin problems. At the same time, leopard is sold in local markets and juice, jam and herbal products are being made from it.
Some non-governmental organizations are now training tribals to make jam, juice and herbal products from leopards, causing their income to double.
In Ayurveda, leopards are considered useful in treating many diseases. Its leaves and bark are used in diarrhea, abdominal pain and treatment of skin diseases. The antioxidants present in the fruit are helpful in fighting serious diseases like cancer and heart diseases. Regular intake of leopards also helps to keep the skin healthy and shiny. Also it is a low calorie fruit, which is helpful in weight control.
In modern lifestyle where people are returning to natural and nutritious foods, leopard is emerging as a great option. Experts believe that the rural economy can be strengthened by the cultivation of tendufuffal and its products.
