New Delhi, Sep 22 (IANS) Showing commitment towards wildlife conservation, the Union Cabinet has approved Rs 2,602.98 crore for the Wildlife Habitat Integrated Development Scheme.
This benefit will be available to 55 tiger reserves, 33 elephant reserves and 718 protected areas of the country. Due to this scheme, eco-tourism and related activities will generate livelihood opportunities of more than 50 lakh employment days. This includes direct and indirect employment opportunities.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, this scheme includes projects related to the development of natural habitats of tigers, elephants and wildlife. This was one of the schemes included in the government’s 100-day action plan.
Project Tiger uses technology such as the M-STRIPS (Monitoring System for Tigers, Intensive Conservation and Ecological Status) mobile application in daily management processes.
This app is in line with the ‘Digital India’ initiative and will be used extensively for collection of ecological data at field level during the fifth cycle of tiger estimation across India in 2022.
Project Cheetah is also a component of Project Tiger, which is being continued under Wildlife Habitat Integrated Development Scheme.
Project Lion has also been placed under Wildlife Habitat Integrated Development Scheme to accomplish the activities stipulated under the document ‘Amrit Kal Ka Vision: Lion @2047’.
Under Project Elephant, priority will be given to taking advantage of information and communication technology to prevent human-elephant conflict. Initially, it will be implemented on a pilot basis. Then it will be implemented on a large scale.
