New Delhi, 31 May (IANS). On the occasion of World Tobacco Prohibition Day, Walkathon was organized in Rohini area of Delhi on Saturday to bring slogans like ‘Walk for Life’ and ‘Tobacco Quit’ to the masses. During this time, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijendra Gupta was present and special emphasis was given to people on leaving tobacco. He flagged off for walk for life.
Through this walkthan, many members of the Indian Medical Association and doctors of the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center gave information about the problems of tobacco among the people.
Speaking to the media, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijendra Gupta said that tobacco is not only intoxication but it is a poison. He said that tobacco is a addiction and it can be reduced by awareness only. During this time, he gave special emphasis on the youth and said that today’s younger generation has been taking drugs as a fashion, which needs to explain how harmful tobacco can prove to be for their health.
He said that there is a need to tell the youth about the fatal results from tobacco and make them aware. For this, social institutions and institutes should come forward. The government enacts laws to prevent such things and take many steps. But until public sentiment, mass movement and public cooperation, this fight cannot be won.
At the same time, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center Medical Director Dr. Sudhir Rawal said that tobacco is a major factor of cancer. Not consuming tobacco can reduce the chances of cancer. It affects the whole body. Not taking tobacco increases age. Smoking a cigarette reduces your life by three to four minutes. In such a situation, tobacco should not be taken in any form. People need to be aware for this. Children need to be handled in Teen Age. Some children start consuming it due to curiosity as to what is in it. Later children become accustomed to it.
