Chandigarh, October 30 (IANS). Two-year-old Kenyan baby Prosper has created history as the youngest pancreas donor in India. His generosity gave new life to two serious kidney failure patients. One patient received a simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant and the other received a single kidney transplant.
Prosper’s family took the selfless decision to donate their son’s organs, thereby giving the gift of ‘sight’ to two more people. In this way, his family’s generosity has brought new hope into the lives of four people. This was the first international organ donation case at PGIMER, Chandigarh.
Prosper’s family made a difficult but courageous decision to bring light into the lives of others amidst their pain. Director of PGIMER Prof. Expressing his deepest condolences, Vivek Lal said, “This case highlights the importance of organ donation. It is extremely tragic to lose life at such a young age, but this decision of Prosper’s family gives us a unique example of kindness and service, which Can give the gift of life to others even in moments of despair.”
On October 17, Prosper was seriously injured in an accident and was immediately brought to PGIMER, but on October 26, he was declared brain-dead. Despite deep grief, Prosper’s family decided to donate his organs, making him the youngest pancreas donor in the country.
Prosper’s mother, Jacqueline Diary, said, “We are heartbroken, but take solace in the knowledge that our son’s organs will give new life to others. This way we can keep his memory alive and give others hope “
Medical Superintendent of PGIMER Prof. Vipin Kaushal said that after necessary approval from the Kenyan High Commission, the PGIMER team transplanted pancreas and kidney simultaneously to one patient, while the kidney was given to the other patient. Additionally, the donation of corneas from Prosper’s eyes will enable two others to see again, making a big difference to the lives of four people.
