Researchers at the City University of Hong Kong said these cutting-edge advances promise to improve patient care and outcomes by providing real-time information about heart health.
“Our work on the wearable heart sound device is an important step forward in the early detection and monitoring of cardiovascular diseases,” said Dr. Bi Luan Kho, an associate professor at the City University of Hong Kong and a leading researcher in the field.
“These devices have the potential to provide more accurate, real-time heart health data, which will revolutionize the way we approach heart health,” Kho said.
Devices like stethoscopes have long been valuable for diagnosing cardiovascular problems, but they fall short when it comes to continuous monitoring.
“Wearable technology has emerged as a transformative solution, enabling continuous and real-time tracking of heart sounds,” the researchers said. “However, challenges such as sensitivity, comfort, and data accuracy still hinder widespread adoption.”
These barriers highlight the need to advance wearable heart sound devices to overcome existing limitations and improve heart health monitoring globally.
This research highlights the transformational journey from traditional stethoscopes to cutting-edge wearable sensors that enable continuous cardiac activity monitoring. This involves the development of mechanoacoustic sensors with soft, flexible designs that prioritize user comfort while maintaining high sensitivity and specificity.

Noise reduction techniques are also considered important for accurate analysis of heart sounds, dealing with the low frequency, nature of heart sounds and their sensitivity to environmental interference.
