Cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) are being reported in Maharashtra. After several cases were reported in Pune, one person has died due to Guillain-Barré syndrome in Solapur. According to Maharashtra Health Department, till January 26, there were 101 active patients of Guillain Barre Syndrome. Which includes Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and many other districts. According to Delhi’s famous neuro surgeon Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Jha, ‘Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is an acute disease. That means it is a sudden disease. In which the veins start swelling. There is a layer in our body called myelin sheet which is necessary for the proper functioning of nerves. Due to this syndrome demyelinating occurs. That means our own immune system starts attacking that protection layer of the nerves. The immune system that works to protect us from diseases and illnesses attacks our myeling sheets. Many nerves are affected by this. That is why it is also called AIDP.
Symptoms of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)
Talking about the symptoms of Guillain-Barré syndrome, weakness starts in the legs first. This weakness moves upward in the body. It can be triggered by any viral infection like cold, cough, diarrhea, any surgery and vaccine can cause this syndrome. After which our immune system attacks our own body. Its symptoms spread rapidly. However, the good thing is that in most cases things become stable within a week. But in 20 percent cases, people start facing increasing problems. In such a situation, there is a need to put the patient on a ventilator or the heart also gets involved. Therefore, it is important that you consult a doctor only if you feel mild symptoms.

Treatment of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)
Since this is a disease related to our immune system, two types of therapies prove to be effective. A plasma pheresis, in which the antibodies that are attacking us are taken out of the body. The second one is IVIG. There is a risk of death of 5% people due to this syndrome.
