New Delhi, 11 July (IANS). Whitebhati is a kind of shrubby plant and is also known as ‘Beerberry’. It is usually found in cold areas of the Northern Hemisphere. It is traditionally used to relieve kidney stones and joint pain.
The scientific name of whitebhati is ‘Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi’. It is a green plant throughout the year. In the spring, small, bell -shaped flowers bloom on it, which range from white to pink. After these flowers, fruits like shiny red or orange colored, round berries are fruits on it. At the same time, its name ‘Bareberry’ was named because its fruits are very much liked by bears.
It is also used as a decorative plant due to its spreading nature and evergreen leaves, especially in gardens and parks, where it is planted for the ground covering (groundcover).
According to the National Library of Medicine, the extracts of white Bhati leaves contain an active ingredient called arbutin, which turns into hydroquinone in the body. Hydroquinone has urinary depressive properties that help fight bacteria in the urinary tract.
It is traditionally used to treat urine infection (such as cystitis) and bladder inflammation. It is also very helpful in balanceing the pH of urine and increasing the urine flow, which helps prevent stones from growing or remove them. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which help relieve joint pain and other inflammatory problems.
It should not be used without medical advice, especially when there is a serious kidney problem. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use it.
Some American tribes have been used as a smoking mixture (as a tobacco alternative), called ‘kinikinic’.
