New Delhi, November 8 (IANS). According to a new report by the World Health Organization (WHO), it is extremely important to pay attention to health while taking steps against climate change. The report comes ahead of the 2024 UN Climate Conference (COP29), which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In this special report, WHO has appealed to world leaders to include health in climate negotiations and not consider it an isolated issue.
“The climate crisis is also a health crisis, so prioritizing health in climate action is not only a moral and legal responsibility but can pave the way for a more just and equitable future,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in the report. “
This report has been prepared by WHO in collaboration with more than 100 organizations and 300 experts. It outlines some important steps that can improve the lives of the 3.6 billion people who are most at risk from climate change.
The report says that the main criteria for success in climate change should be human health and well-being. Apart from this, it has been said to end dependence on fossil fuels (traditional fuels) and stop their subsidies. The report recommends investing in clean and sustainable alternatives, which can reduce the increasing diseases caused by pollution and also reduce carbon emissions.
The report provides practical guidelines for reducing the health impacts of climate change, strengthening health systems, protecting health systems from the impacts of climate change, and promoting the health and benefits of climate change mitigation. are given.
Recently a report by The Lancet said that India is one of the countries most affected by climate change. According to the report, 10 out of 15 health threats have reached record levels.
Although the 2015 Paris Agreement pledged to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, temperatures are still close to this limit. If timely action is not taken, it may lead to increased health risks.
