New Delhi, October 19 (IANS). With increasing age, people have to face many types of health problems. In such situations, bone related problems are common. Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which with time the bones become weak and the person starts having pain problems.
World Osteoporosis Day is celebrated every year on 20 October. This year the theme of World Osteoporosis Day has been “Say No to Fragile Bones”. To make people aware about this, IANS spoke to orthopedic Dr. Harsh Lapsiwala.
Dr. Harsh Lapsiwala said, “Osteoporosis is a bone disease, which is caused by a decrease in bone mineral density and bone mass. This can reduce bone strength, increasing the risk of fractures (breaking bones). This disease often increases with increasing age. It mostly appears with increasing age.
He said, “In addition, genes, age and gender increase the chances of developing osteoporosis. But these possibilities can be reduced with some changes in lifestyle. Women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than men, because women’s bones are smaller and thinner than men’s. Women face this problem after menopause. Before menopause, women have full amount of bone-protecting estrogen, which starts decreasing later. This problem can be seen before time due to sedentary lifestyle, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking.
Regarding the ways to avoid this, Dr. Harsh Lapsiwala said, “This disease mostly occurs due to deficiency of calcium and vitamin D in the body. For this, there is a need to include calcium and vitamin D rich foods like milk and milk products, eggs, fish and green leafy vegetables in your diet. Also make sure to consume calcium (1,000-1,200 mg daily) and vitamin D (600-800 IU daily).
The doctor has advised to take food rich in nutrients along with taking Vitamin D. Along with this, he has said that for this it is necessary to change one’s lifestyle also.
Diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, hyperthyroidism and certain gastrointestinal disorders can affect bone health, he said. Further said, the problem of osteoporosis can be cured in time. This disease can be cured by screening and lifestyle changes. For those who are struggling with this, Dr. Lapsiwala advised regular medical checkups.
