New Delhi. Former Prime Minister of India and eminent economist Dr. Manmohan Singh is being cremated with full state honors at Nigambodh Ghat on Saturday. Veteran leaders of the country reached there and paid tribute to him. Many prominent leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, former Congress President Sonia Gandhi were present on the occasion. It is noteworthy that Dr. Manmohan Singh died on Thursday night at the age of 92. He was taken to AIIMS hospital in Delhi due to age-related ailments, where he died. The mortal remains of former PM Dr Manmohan Singh was kept at his residence 3, Motilal Nehru Road, New Delhi on Friday for the last glimpse of the public.
Dr. Singh was a towering personality in the field of Indian politics and economy, whose contributions transformed the country and earned him respect across the world. As Finance Minister in the early 1990s, Dr Singh was the architect of India’s economic liberalisation. With his unique foresight, he initiated reforms that not only rescued the country from the balance of payments crisis, but also opened the doors to global markets. The policy steps taken by him promoting deregulation, privatization and foreign investment laid the foundation for India’s rapid development. Under his leadership, India became one of the fastest growing economies in the world, a testament to his talent and vision.
Former PM Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. Manmohan Singh entered politics in the year 1991 when on June 21, P.V. He was made the Finance Minister in Narasimha Rao’s government. At that time the country was facing a serious economic crisis. P.V. Along with Narasimha Rao, he had cleared the way for foreign investment. While being the Finance Minister, he implemented the policies of economic liberalization in the country, which encouraged foreign investment and connected India to the world market.
He was elected Rajya Sabha MP from Assam for the first time in 1991. He made many reforms to improve the economy of the country, which improved the economy of India.
He was also the leader of the opposition from 1998 to 2004. However, after the victory of the Congress Party in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, he took oath as the 14th Prime Minister. He held the post of Prime Minister in UPA-1 and 2. Manmohan Singh took oath as Prime Minister for the first time on 22 May 2004 and for the second time on 22 May 2009.
