15 year old vehicles will no longer be junk. Car owners

Relief news for crores of car owners in the country

The government is preparing to change the scrap policy, so that vehicle owners will not need to send their vehicles to scrap after 15 years. Under the new rule, the decision will be taken on the basis of pollution caused by the vehicles instead of their ‘age’.

Will be scrapped based on pollution

Anurag Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, said at the annual conference of SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) that the government is appealing to the automobile industry to help make the pollution testing program ‘reliable’. Jain said, “When you make it mandatory to scrap a 15-year-old vehicle, then people’s question is justified that if they have maintained their vehicle well, then why should it be declared scrap.”

There is a need to improve pollution testing

Jain further said, “The government is working on a new policy for this. Can we refer to vehicles before BS-2? We are not talking about age, but will take a decision based on the pollution emitted by the vehicles.” He appealed to the automobile industry to make pollution testing ‘reliable’ even in this situation.

Discount on purchase of vehicles

The Road Transport and Highways Secretary also praised the automobile industry for offering up to three per cent discount on purchase of new vehicles in exchange of old vehicles declared as scrap.
