450 people fell ill due to suspected food poisoning after attending a village fair in Kolhapur district of western Maharashtra. The police gave this information on Wednesday. An official of the Kurundawad police station said that about 50 people are undergoing treatment in a hospital in Shirol and the condition of all is said to be stable.
The official said that a fair was organized in Shivakawadi village on Tuesday, where ‘Kheer’ was served as Prasad. A police officer said, “People complained of diarrhea and fever since Wednesday morning. So far, 450 people have fallen ill due to suspected food poisoning. Most of them have claimed that they had eaten kheer in the fair. However, there were other food stalls there too. ‘
He said that by Wednesday afternoon, due to concern that 250 people were ill, health officials went door-to-door survey and identified many more cases, which increased the total number to 450. The official said that 50 people are undergoing treatment in the hospital, while the rest have been discharged. The condition of all the patients admitted is stable. He said, “Samples of food items collected from the fair have been sent to forensic laboratory to confirm food poisoning.”
