Five people were killed and around 30 others were injured in an explosion in a cracker construction and packaging unit near Lambi village in Sri Muktsar Sahib district of Punjab. The police gave this information on Friday.
Police said the incident took place at around one o’clock in the night.
Lambi Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jaspal Singh said on the phone that the explosion took place in a two-storey factory located on Singhawali-Kotli Road in Shri Muktsar Sahib. He told that migrant laborers used to work in the factory.
The DSP said that the injured have been taken to other hospitals including AIIMS Bathinda and most of them have been stated to be out of danger. He said that the cause of the explosion is being investigated.
Dr. Akhil Chaudhary, Senior Superintendent of Police of Shri Muktsar Sahib, said that the explosion took place in a room in the manufacturing room of the unit, causing the roof to collapse.
The SSP said that many people were trapped in the rubble and the rescue operation was started as soon as the police received the information about the incident.
The SSP stated over the phone that it seems that the explosion was caused by the material used in the manufacture of firecrackers, although the real cause would be known only after investigation and forensic investigation.
