Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on the Congress on Tuesday, 24 June 2025 on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Emergency and said that the people of India would never accept dictatorship. Addressing the ’50 Year of Emergency of Emergency’ in Delhi, Shah termed the emergency imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975 as a “black chapter on democracy”. He said, “We won the war against the Emergency, because the people of this country cannot tolerate dictatorship. The Constitution and the spirit of democracy are natural for India.”
Shah raised the question of why the 50 -year -old incident should be remembered. He replied, “Memories in 50 years can be blurred, but it is necessary to keep the memory of emergency fresh, otherwise it can become a threat to a democratic country.” He referred to the cruelty of the time when people were jailed by calling them “anti-national” without protests or slogans. Shah said that at the age of 11, he saw the Emergency, although its effect was less due to the public government in Gujarat.
He lashed out at the Congress, saying, “Emergency was told to protect the nation, but the truth was that it was to protect their power.” Shah said that the Emergency also showed the strength of India’s democracy, because the public fought it firmly. He described this program organized by BJP thinker Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Research Foundation (SPMRF) as historic, in which heroes fought against Emergency were honored
