The medical community of Kerala has expressed deep concern over the incidents of delivery at home in the state and demanded a strict law against such criminal practices. The Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) protested against the death of a 35 -year -old woman in Malappuram district on 5 April. The woman died due to excessive bleeding, when she was giving birth to a child in her rented house. The Sangh said that it is very important to enact a strict law against such criminal practices.
KGMOA said, “It is a very disturbing thing that even in this era when modern medical science has moved so much, people are still ready to adopt such treatment methods that have no scientific basis. The organization demands that strict laws should be enacted against such criminal practices.”
“Every citizen’s right”
KGMOA, the only organization representing doctors in Kerala’s healthcare, also mentioned that Kerala is a state that has achieved significant achievements in health indicators globally. Especially, in maternal and infant mortality which is equal to developed countries. It states that every citizen has the right to the benefit of these achievements in the public health sector, which has been achieved by the collective efforts of years.
The Sangh said, “These achievements achieved in the public health sector, which have been achieved by years of collective hard work, are rights of every citizen, but due to some special selfish elements, Keralas are being denied quality health services and loss of precious human life.”
3 lakh delivery every year
KGMOA also reported that there are about 3,00,000 delivery every year, most of which are in hospitals, but about 500 deliverys are still at home. The Sangh stated the main reason for this problem that people are attracted to either deliberate or inadvertently obsolete and unscientific treatment methods.
The Sangh said, “Every child has the right to get proper medical help during and after delivery and live a healthy life in society. It is a punishable offense to deny this right and strict legal steps should be taken against such practices. There is a need for immediate intervention from the government in this matter.”
Kerala Health Minister Veena George has warned against those who promote delivery at home through social media after a woman’s death at home during delivery at Malappuram. The woman’s husband has been arrested and a case has been registered on charges of non-Irradatan homicide. The minister said, “According to the statistics, there are about 400 deliveries at home every year in the state. This year there were a total of two lakh delivery, out of which 382 were deliveries at home.” (input language)
