Agencies taking action on drug smugglers-

In following the vision of PM Modi to create ‘drug-free India’, the Amritsar zonal unit of NCB has busted the major networks involved in illegal deviations and distribution of pharmaceutical drugs for non-medical use in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. In the investigation of intelligence -based campaigns and cases ‘top to bottom’ and ‘bottom to top’ approach under the guidance of Amit Shah from December 2024 to April 2025 resulted in significant seizures and arrests, which highlighted a complex alliance between manufacturers, stockists and front operators. Raids were conducted in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi on April 20-21. As a result of the search in Uttarakhand, 11,693 CBCs bottles and 2.9 kg traumadol powder were seized from JR Pharmaceuticals. 19,25,200 tablets in the premises of major distributor Mbit Bio Medics in Himachal Pradesh and searched in the premises of Ashi Pharmaceutical in Bawana, Delhi, seized 1.17 crore traumadol and alprazolam tablets, which reflects large -scale unauthorized capture and illegal distribution of pharmaceutical drugs. The owner of Mbit Bio Medics was earlier arrested when he was trying to flee to Vietnam from Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi on 18 April. Investigation revealed that the owner of Himachal Pradesh’s Mbit Bio Medics had earlier worked in Delhi, where his drug license was canceled in December 2022. Hiding this, he received a new license in Himachal Pradesh and started another firm called Ashi Pharmaceutical in Delhi in the name of his colleague. The investigation began four months ago when a man in Amritsar, claiming to be a medical professional, was caught with 2,280 Alprazolam and 1,220 Traumadol Tablet. Further investigation revealed a local distribution chain, resulting in several arrests and later searched 21,400 and Traumadol Tablet and 43,000 Alprazolam tablets were recovered. In February 2025, the separate seizure of 5,000 traumadol hydrochloride (Trackom-100) tablet in Amritsar in another case led the investigators to a series extending to Taran Taran, Dehradun and Mananwala. The source showed that illegal supply of illegal pharmaceutical drugs was being done by individuals operating without license with the support of dummy medical setup. The investigation of both cases revealed the involvement of the same pharmaceutical manufacturing company in Haridwar, JR Pharmaceuticals, which raised doubts and so far the investigation of M/SJR pharmaceuticals, Haridwar and others revealed the deviation of pharmaceutical medicines. In February 2025, 16,860 tramadol tablets, 327 codeine-based cuff syrup bottles, and 2.55 lakh loose traumadol tablets (80.7 kg) hidden in drums were seized in the raids conducted on JR Pharmaceuticals. In the same month, 8,89,064 CBCs bottles were recovered in the raids conducted on the basis of information received during interrogation in the same month, which were placed elsewhere to be sent elsewhere without valid documents. Investigations also revealed that several front stockist firms were found to be fake or non-operated and drugs were deviated through them. One such firm – M/S Tiwari Medical Agency, a dessert/tailor shop came out on the verification of Dehradun and the mistress of the firm was found to be working as a maid, while other firms, M/s Kavati Health Care Private Limited, Dehradun and M/S Life Care Pharma, Kolkata, were not present at the declared address. The mastermind behind the Dummy Stockist M/S Tiwari Medical Agency was arrested, resulting in seizing 1.24 lakh Alprazolam tablets from a roadside dhaba in Dehradun. Investigation revealed that he was also receiving pharmaceutical medicines from other firms. Narcotics Control Bureau, GST Department, State Drug Controllers, Income Tax Authorities, CBN and financial institutions are actively coordinated to detect the entire scope of Drug Diversion Network. In the last four months, the investigation so far has led to a total seizure of more than 1.42 crore traumadol and alprazolam tablets, 2.9 kg traumadol powder, and 9,01,084 CBCs bottles (about 135 tons) and 15 accused from four different states. During the investigation, clues have also been found about the involvement of other people and in the next few weeks and seizure is expected. This seizure is an example of NCB’s commitment to successfully demolish the drug network. The NCB seeks the support of citizens in the fight against drug trafficking.
