Shimla: Snowfall has started in many districts of Himachal Pradesh. Due to this, at least 233 roads in the state including three national highways have been closed. Officials said that there was snowfall in the higher areas of Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Chamba and Sirmaur districts of the state. Shimla Hotel and Tourism Stakeholders Association President M.K. Seth said that 70 percent of the hotel rooms in Shimla are full. He said that due to snowfall, room bookings have increased by 30 percent.
233 roads of Himachal closed
In fact, traffic on the National Highway is blocked between Attari and Leh, between Sainj to Aut in Kullu district, between Khab and Sangam in Kinnaur district and at Gramphu in Lahaul and Spiti. Traffic has come to a standstill on a total of 233 roads across the state. Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue and Disaster) Omkar Sharma said that the tourists present in about 500 vehicles stranded near Atal Tunnel were rescued safely by late Monday night. According to reports, four people died in accidents in the last 24 hours due to snowfall and several people were injured at some places due to vehicle slipping. The administration has not yet shared any information about the dead.
The number of tourists is continuously increasing in Himachal.
Advice given to tourists
The State Emergency Operation Center said that maximum 145 roads are closed in Shimla, followed by 25 in Kullu and 20 in Mandi. It said that 356 transformers have broken down due to snowfall, causing power failure in many areas. He advised tourists to follow the advisories issued by the district administration and police, listen to suggestions from local people and avoid driving in snow.

Complete preparation for relief from snowfall
After reviewing the road condition with officials, Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh said tourists are expected to arrive in Shimla, Kullu-Manali and Dalhousie. He said that the department is fully prepared to handle the influx of tourists. A total of 268 machines, including two ‘snow blowers’, are being used to remove snow from the roads. Khadrala received 24 cm snowfall. After this, there was 16.5 cm snowfall in Sangla, 15.3 cm in Shillaru, 15-15 cm in Chaupal and Jubbal, 14 cm in Kalpa, 10 cm in Nichar, 7 cm in Shimla, 6 cm in Pooh and 5 cm in Jot.

Meteorological Department issued alert
The Meteorological Department has predicted rain and snowfall in some parts of Himachal Pradesh and especially at some places in Shimla from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon and the possibility of rain will be maximum on Saturday. The weather department has issued ‘Orange’ alert for severe cold in Bilaspur, Una, Hamirpur and Mandi, while ‘Yellow’ due to possibility of dense fog till Thursday in Bhakra Dam reservoir area and parts of Balh valley of Mandi. Alert has been issued. Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest in the state, with the night temperature recorded at minus 6.9 degrees Celsius. (Input- PTI)
