In his book A Maverick in Politics, Mani Shankar Aiyar has mentioned his political career, ministerial position in Narasimha Rao’s government, the first UPA government, etc. However, his focus in the book is on the fall of the second UPA government. Mani Shankar Aiyar said while talking to the news agency that Congress’s decline from 404 seats in 1984 to 44 seats in 2014 was sad and disappointing. Mani Shankar Aiyar says that if Pranab Mukherjee had been made the PM candidate in 2013, then perhaps Congress’s defeat in 2014 would not have been so shameful. Mani Shankar Aiyar said that there were many allegations of corruption against the UPA government. These were not responded to properly by the government and the Congress and due to this the opposition damaged the trust of the government.
According to Mani Shankar Aiyar, Manmohan Singh had to undergo bypass surgery several times and he could never recover completely. Mani Shankar Aiyar has written in the book that this had an impact on governance. According to the Congress leader, when PM Manmohan Singh fell ill, Congress President Sonia Gandhi also fell ill. Congress did not even make any official announcement about Sonia’s health. According to Mani Shankar Aiyar, the pace slowed down and there was lack of governance in the PMO and Congress President’s office. He has written in the book that many crises occurred. Especially the government and the Congress party did not face Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement properly.
