New Delhi. Aam Aadmi Party has once again captured the post of Delhi MCD Mayor. Aam Aadmi Party candidate Mahesh Khinchi won the mayor’s election in a close contest with the BJP candidate. Mahesh Khinchi is a councilor from Dev Nagar ward of Karol Bagh. He captured the mayor’s chair by defeating BJP candidate Kishan Lal by just 3 votes. As soon as the results were announced, Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, present in the House, along with other party leaders expressed happiness by showing the victory sign. Earlier, Congress had boycotted voting. A total of 284 votes were to be cast in the House for the post of Mayor. But only 265 votes were cast. Of these, 2 votes were declared invalid. In this way, AAP candidate Mahesh Khinchi got 133 votes and his rival Kishan Lal of BJP got 130 votes.

AAP’s Ravinder Bhardwaj Deputy Mayor
The post of Deputy Mayor in MCD has also gone to the Aam Aadmi Party. AAP candidate Ravinder Bhardwaj has been elected unopposed as Deputy Mayor. BJP candidate Neeta Bisht withdrew her nomination.
Mayor’s tenure will be only for 4 months
The tenure of the new Mayor of Delhi will be only 4 months. At the same time, Congress expressed deep displeasure over the short tenure proposed for the Dalit Mayor and boycotted the elections.
Shaili Oberoi got extension
Earlier, Aam Aadmi Party’s Shaili Oberoi was elected Mayor of Delhi. Although his tenure had ended, he was given an extension for the time being. Mayoral elections were to be held in April 2024 and BJP and AAP had also declared candidates for this. Due to lack of CM’s recommendation on the file for determining the presiding officer, it was returned and the existing mayor was given extension till the new mayor was elected. The elections were pending since then. BJP councilor Satya Sharma was appointed the presiding officer for today’s elections.
