Janeu and Kalava controversy in Karnataka
Bengaluru: The Education Department has taken a big action in the matter of removing Janeu and Rakshasutra (Kalava) from students during the CET examination in Karnataka. On the instructions of the Department of Education, the management of Sai Emptress PU College dismissed Principal Chandrashekhar Bahadar and Second Class Satish Pawar on Thursday for permission to allow the examination to allow the examination to the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) candidate Suchivrata Kulkarni. Following the report of Bidar Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Sharma, Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) and Karnataka Higher Education Department directed both to dismiss both.
The principal and clerk were found to be negligent for not following the KEA protocol, under which the KCET examination was allowed to wear non-metal janeu and kalava during the KCET examination. The report also revealed that the PU college staff made derogatory remarks on the student.
However, on 16 April, the student took the examination of Physics and Chemistry by wearing janeu at the same examination center, which revealed inconsistencies in ‘following the rules’. The deputy commissioner’s report recommended disciplinary action against both and corrective measures for students.
However, the government has not yet taken any decision regarding giving the student a second chance. An education officer said, “Despite being absent in the mathematics examination, the student will get a ranking for engineering courses, this will be discussed with Higher Education Minister Dr. MC Sudhakar. In addition, the minister will take up the matter before the Chief Minister before deciding to conduct the exam again, so that the fair and the student can get justice for all.”
Meanwhile, home guards Raghu D and Kalavati, responsible for such an incident in Shivamoga, have been suspended due to Janeu controversy. DC Gurudutt Hegde said in an interim report submitted to KEA that “it was found that the home guards had instructed a student appearing in the morning examination on 16 April. The student voluntarily removed the thread and went to take the exam. However, the report denied that the claim was denied that the Home Guard forcibly removed the janeu and the student was stopped from entry.
The report further stated that two other students later reached the examination hall wearing Kalava. At that time, the Principal of Shri Adichunchangiri Composite English Medium High School sought an explanation from the Deputy Director of the Pre-University over the phone and allowed the students to appear in the examination without removing the thread on getting the clarification. It was also found in the report that the afternoon session (chemistry) on 16 April and the examination held on 17 April was held at the same examination center without any interruption.
Meanwhile, Shivamoga police has also registered a case against unknown CET officials in this case on the basis of a complaint of CET candidate Natraj Bhagwat. He had alleged that the examination center officials gave the students’ janeu okat. The officials allegedly threatened the students that if they wore janeu, they would be stopped from entering the examination hall. The complainant has alleged that the examination center officials cut the holy threads worn in the hands of the students and thrown them into the dustbin.
