Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has warned India that Pakistan is ready for war if it violated the Indus Water Treaty. He made this statement while addressing party workers in Kasur in Punjab province, Pakistan. Bilawal said that if India stopped the water, then the farmers of Pakistan will be destroyed and Pakistan will not sit with hands on hand.
He said that the water of the Indus river is a lifeline for the farmers of Pakistan and no attempt to stop it will be tolerated. Bilawal’s statement came at a time when Pakistan Army Chief General Aseem Munir recently threatened to use nuclear weapons.
The Indus Water Treaty was signed between India and Pakistan in the World Bank’s mediation in 1960, under which the water of six rivers was divided between the two countries. Pakistan claims that India is trying to stop the water of Chenab, Jhelum and Indus, while India says it is running projects according to its rights under the treaty. Analysts say that such statements can also be an attempt to capitalize on domestic politics amid Pakistan’s economic and political crisis.
