In the northeastern state of Manipur, tension is seen deepening once again. The administration has implemented full curfew after the violence between two communities in Churachandpur district. One person’s death and many others were reported injured in the clash.
How did the violence erupt?
On March 18, a dispute broke out between Jomi and our community after a person removed the flag of Jomi community from the mobile tower. The dispute spread so fast that the situation turned into a violent clash. A person lost his life in this violence.
Where and where curfew?
According to the order issued by DM Dharun Kumar of Churachandpur:
Region curfew status Kangwai, Samulamalan, Sangaikot completely banned other areas from 6 am to 5 pm
The curfew has been implemented with immediate effect and will continue until 17 April. The administration says that this order will remain in effect until the situation is normal.
Strictness and solution of administration
Soon after the incident, the local administration and representatives of both villages held an emergency meeting, in which two important decisions were taken:
Appeal to maintain peace: Appeal to stay away from rumors and restraint on social media.
Initiative to resolve land disputes: Trust to resolve the ongoing land dispute between the two communities.
From the Editor’s point of view:
Manipur has been struggling with ethnic stress for the past several months. Now the controversy over a flag seems to be changing once again in large social stress. The challenge of administration is not only law and order, but also to maintain social harmony.
