Bagihar Dam built on Chenab River
After the Pahalgam terror attack, India is taking action one by one against the enemy country Pakistan. India is engaged in isolating the enemy country. India has stopped the flow of water from the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab river after eliminating the Indus Water Treaty from Pakistan. India is now preparing for a similar action on the Kishanganga dam on the Jhelum River. This information has been given by news agency PTI quoting a source.
This dam has been the subject of dispute for a long time
It is known that the Bagihar dam has been a matter of long dispute between India and Pakistan. Pakistan demanded mediation from the World Bank in the past. The Kishanganga dam has faced legal and diplomatic investigation.
India ends decades -old Indus Water Treaty
India has abolished the decades-old Indus Water Treaty in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. This Indus Water Treaty was done by the World Bank. Since 1960, the Indus River between India and Pakistan controls the use of its tributaries.
Indus water treaty was done in 1960
The treaty was signed between the two countries in 1960 by the then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the then Pakistani President Ayub Khan. It is often appreciated as a rare example of peaceful cooperation between two hostile neighbors.
Indus Treaty saw three wars
The treaty has also seen three wars between India and Pakistan – 1965, 1971 and 1999. It has now been suspended indefinitely. The treaty controls the expansion of the Indus river system between India and Pakistan. (With input of PTI)
