Three days after the Air India aircraft crashed to London in Ahmedabad, officials have so far identified 47 victims through DNA testing and the bodies of 24 have been handed over to their families.
Since many bodies have been so burnt that they are unable to be identified or they have been damaged, the authorities are conducting DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims of this horrific tragedy.
Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajneesh Patel told reporters, “A total of 47 victims of the aircraft accident have been identified so far through DNA Milan. The bodies of 24 of them have been handed over to the families concerned. These deceased were from various parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat.”
On Thursday, 29 others were killed in the plane crash on Boeing 787-8 (AL 171) and 29 others, including all the people except a member of the crew and five MBBS students on the ground.
The aircraft crashed at the premises of a medical college in Meghaninagar, a few moments after flying from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 pm on Thursday afternoon.
The central government on Saturday formed a high-level multi-disciplinary panel to assess the “root cause” of the aircraft accident and assess any contribution, including mechanical failure, human mistake and regulatory compliance.
The panel headed by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan was directed to submit its report in three months.
