Delhi High Court has sought response from the Center and Uber on the petition of a visually impaired lawyer. The lawyer has alleged that he faced discrimination while availing the services of the Uber app.
On December 24, Justice Sanjeev Narula issued notice on the petition filed by advocate Rahul Bajaj and asked the Center and Uber India Technology Private Limited to respond.
Bajaj’s lawyer alleged that his client faced discriminatory and abusive behavior while booking an auto on the app, besides facing several other challenges while availing the company’s services.
He mentioned the incident in which the auto driver not only refused to drop Bajaj at the desired location but also behaved inappropriately with him after he reluctantly agreed to the journey.
The petitioner argued that the driver’s conduct was an example of discrimination. She said service providers like Uber have failed to ensure that their drivers are adequately trained and sensitized as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act.
The petitioner said that although Uber claims to have a zero-tolerance policy against discrimination, it is ineffective in increasing sensitivity towards disability.
Bajaj said that despite posting about such incidents on social media, he is facing reluctance from Uber auto drivers.
Appropriate measures have been requested in this regard in the petition. The case will be heard on March 27, 2025.
