The incident came to light when a student noticed Kushan’s mobile phone near the washroom cubicle and raised an alarm. “She started shouting, which brought the nearby students there,” said a police officer.
On reaching the spot, the students found that one of the cubicles was locked but there was no response from inside. This aroused their suspicion. They forced open the door and found Kushan hiding inside. His phone was immediately confiscated.
The incident took place at around 10:45 am, when most of the students were in their classrooms. As news of the incident spread, hundreds of students came out of their classrooms to protest, demanding strict action against Kushan.
Two police platoons immediately arrived at the scene to handle the protest, and the college management handed Kushan over to law enforcement.
An investigating officer said that two videos recorded between 10:30 and 10:45 were found in Kushan’s phone. The device is being sent for forensic analysis. A student said that she found the phone when she heard the notification sound and saw the camera in the washroom.
The police have registered an FIR under Section 77 of the BNS Act, which deals with violation of privacy of women and detention.
