A Delhi court on Tuesday postponed its verdict in a murder case against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja adjourned the verdict till January 31 after the prosecution sought time to present further arguments on certain points. “The next date is January 31,” the judge said.
This case pertains to the killing of two people in Saraswati Vihar area during anti-Sikh riots. Kumar, currently lodged in Tihar jail, appeared in the court through video-conference.
The court had reserved its verdict after hearing the final arguments in the case related to the murder of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984.
Initially a case was registered at Punjabi Bagh police station, but later a Special Investigation Team took over the investigation.
The court had framed charges against Kumar on December 16, 2021, finding a “prima facie” case against him.
According to the prosecution, a mob of people armed with deadly weapons had carried out large-scale looting and arson and destroyed properties of Sikhs to avenge the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The prosecution alleged that the mob attacked the house and killed Jaswant and his son, looted the belongings and set their house on fire.
