New Delhi: The central government held a meeting with representatives of Meeti and Cookie communities of Manipur on Saturday. This meeting was held so that permanent peace could be established in the turbulent state. Sources said that this meeting was held under the initiative of the Central Government to find a cordial solution of the struggle between the two communities starting in May 2023. He said that the purpose of the meeting was to increase confidence and cooperation between Meeti and Cookie and to prepare a blueprint to restore peace and normal conditions in Manipur. The meeting was attended by a six -member Meeti delegation, including representatives of the All Manipur United Clubs Organization (AMUCO) and the Federation of Civil Society Organization (FOCS). The cookie delegation consisted of about nine representatives. The Central Government talkiers also included AK Mishra, retired Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau.

Amit Shah had said to call a meeting

Earlier, during the debate on Manipur in Lok Sabha on Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that the Ministry of Home Affairs had earlier discussed with representatives of Meeti and Cookie communities. He said that separate meetings were also held with various organizations of both communities. Responding to the brief debate in the lower house, Shah said, “The Ministry of Home Affairs will soon call a joint meeting.” The House approved a statutory proposal confirming the implementation of President’s rule in Manipur. The Home Minister also said that the government is working to find a way to end the violence, but the top priority is to establish peace. Amit Shah said that the situation in Manipur is largely under control as there has been no death in violence in the last four months, but it cannot be considered satisfactory as the displaced people are still living in relief camps.

President’s rule implemented in Manipur

Please tell that President’s rule was imposed on 13 February after the resignation of the then Chief Minister N Biren Singh on February 9 in Manipur. The state assembly, which has a term till 2027, has been suspended. About 260 people have lost their lives since the ethnic violence erupted between the cookie communities living in the Meeti and mountainous regions in the Imphal Valley in May 2023. During the early phase of the conflict, several thousand weapons were looted from various police stations in Manipur. Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who took over as the Governor on January 3, has been meeting people from different classes since then and is getting information about restoring the general situation in the state.

Efforts are being made to restore peace

After the implementation of President’s rule, the Governor had taken several steps to restore peace and bring back the general situation, including security forces to surrender arms looters. The central government also tried to open the roads of the state for general traffic, although the effort could not succeed due to opposition from the cookie people. Traveling through areas of Meeti or Cookie is completely banned for other communities. Cookie travels through Mizoram to go out of the state, but Meeti does not go to the cookie dominated areas.
