A message with viral army funds on social media is misleading.
New Delhi: A bank account information on social media is becoming increasingly viral, in which people are being appealed to donate one rupee per day. It is being claimed that on the suggestion of Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, the Modi government has recently opened this account to modernize the Indian Army and help the wounded or martyred soldiers in the war, while the truth is that no such cabinet meeting has been held and no such decision has been taken. The viral post also states that this fund will be used to buy weapons for the army and paramilitary forces.
What’s in viral post?
The viral post reads, ‘Another good decision of the Modi government on the suggestion of superstar Akshay Kumar: only one rupee per day, that too for the Indian Army. The Modi government opened a bank account for the Indian Army and the wounded or martyred soldiers in the war area at the cabinet meeting yesterday. Every Indian can donate the amount as per his wish, which is unlimited by starting from Rs 1. With this money, weapons will also be purchased for the army and paramilitary forces.
Viral claim is misleading
The post further claimed that if we donate one rupee of 70% of India’s 130 crore population daily, then this amount would be 100 crores in a day, 3000 crores in 30 days and Rs 36,000 crore in a year, which is more than Pakistan’s annual defense budget. The post also gives details of Canara Bank’s account. The post has appealed people to share this message as much as possible, in which slogans like “Jai Hind” and “Vande Mataram” have also been added.
What is the reality of this claim after all
During the investigation of the veracity of the viral claim, a tweet of 2 September 2016 was found on the official Twitter handle of the Indian Army, which clarified that the viral bank account is of “Army Welfare Fund Battle Casualty”. This account was created by the government to assist the families of the injured or martyred soldiers in the war. Apart from this, this bank account was also confirmed in a government press release of 17 October 2016. This account was not recently opened, but many years ago. This account was not opened for the purpose of purchasing any arms.
Explain that Syndicate Bank and Canara Bank have been merged and now they are the same unit. The merger came into effect on April 1, 2020, when Syndicate Bank became a branch of Canara Bank. This is why the name of the bank is written in the army’s tweet.
Viral claim is completely misleading
If seen in this way, the viral claim is completely misleading. This post has been going viral with different claims on social media for a long time. Earlier, such claims have been denied. This bank account was not recently opened by the government to help the families of soldiers. It has nothing to do with Akshay Kumar or any recent government decision. There is an appeal to the people not to believe such misleading information and check its truth before sharing it. Use only official channels to help the army.
