New Delhi. Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee government, dissatisfied with the life imprisonment awarded to Sanjay Roy, accused in the RG Kar Medical College case of Kolkata, has approached the High Court. The Bengal government has appealed to the Calcutta High Court, demanding death sentence for the convict. Sealdah Court has sentenced life imprisonment to Sanjay Roy, convicted in the case of rape and murder of a female trainee doctor, yesterday. Only after the sentence, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her unhappiness with the court’s decision and said that we will appeal against it in the higher court.
Advocate General Kishore Dutta, on behalf of the West Bengal government, has appealed to the division bench of Justice Devanshu Bhattacharya, which has been accepted. Now this case will be heard in Kolkata High Court. Let us tell you that Sealdah Court Judge Anirban Das did not consider this case as the rarest of the rare case and hence the culprit was not given death sentence. The court directed the West Bengal government to pay Rs 17 as compensation to the family members of the deceased doctor. On the other hand, before being sentenced, convict Sanjay Roy had claimed his innocence.
Sanjay Roy had also alleged that he was being framed to protect those who were involved in the incident. On the other hand, a large number of junior doctors present outside the Sealdah court also demonstrated demanding hanging of the accused. The junior doctors also demanded further investigation into the matter and disclosure of names of all the people involved and punishment to them. On the other hand, BJP had also raised questions on the attitude of the West Bengal government in this matter while demanding death sentence for the culprit.
