On May 24, a cargo ship crashed in the Liberian flag in the Arabian Sea near the Kerala coast. After the accident, many containers on the ship fell into the sea, some of which are said to be full of dangerous substances.
The ship was going towards Roathukudi.
According to reports, the accident occurred due to the upheaval that occurred in the sea due to the onset of southwest monsoon. The ship was supposed to reach Kochi by 10 pm on Saturday night, but currently it is seen bent into the sea near the Kerala coast. The ship had 22 to 24 crew members on this ship. The Indian Navy reported that 9 of them managed to leave the ship with the help of a life jacket.
How did the accident happen?
The ship called MSc ELSA-3 left from Vizhinjam port and was reported to be bent about 38 miles from Kochi. After this, immediate assistance was demanded from the ship.
Relief and rescue operations continue
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has launched relief and rescue operations. 9 out of 24 crew members aboard the ship have gone out safely through Lifeboats, while rescue work is going on for the remaining 15 members.
ICG aircraft have also launched additional life -saving boats near the ship. DG Shipping has directed the ship’s managers to provide immediate rescue services.
Concern about environment
The Indian Coast Guard is monitoring this entire developing situation, so that any kind of life-property loss or environmental damage can be prevented. There is a possibility of presence of dangerous chemicals or flammable substances in the ship -falling containers, which may threaten marine life and coastal areas.
