In view of the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra, police have seized 6 tonnes of silver bricks, gold worth Rs 49 crore and a huge quantity of liquor in a massive operation across the state. Maharashtra is scheduled to go to the polls on November 20, and security has been tightened in the state following the implementation of the election code of conduct. Police and administration are keeping an eye on suspicious activities in all the districts so that the election process can be conducted in a fair and safe manner.

On Sunday, about 6 tonnes of silver bricks were recovered from a van in Mumbai’s Vikhroli area. According to preliminary information, this silver was kept in a warehouse in Mulund and was allegedly brought with the intention of using it in the election campaign. The investigation of the case has been handed over to the Income Tax Department and other concerned agencies to trace the source of the silver and the purpose of its use.
Police in Nashik have seized cash, gold and liquor worth Rs 49 crore. Inspector General of Police Dattatreya Karale said that since the implementation of the Election Code of Conduct, Nashik Police has so far taken action against more than 17,000 people. During this period, 52 firearms and 183 other weapons have also been recovered, which could have affected the election environment.

To ensure peace and security during the elections, 84 contingents of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been deployed in the state. 38 check posts have been set up in areas adjoining Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh to prevent infiltration of illegal material and anti-social elements into the state.
