Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented on 27 January. In this way, Uttarakhand will become the first state to implement such a law. This will bring uniformity in the society and ensure equal rights and responsibilities for all citizens.
In a statement, he said that all preparations for implementing the UCC have been completed, including approval of rules for the implementation of the Act and training of the officials concerned.
Following the President’s approval, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Act was notified on March 12, 2024. Dhami said that UCC will bring uniformity in society and ensure equal rights and responsibilities for all citizens.
He said, “The Uniform Civil Code, is a sacrifice given by our state in the great yagya being done by the Prime Minister to create a developed, organized, harmonious and self -reliant nation.”
The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand said, “An attempt has been made to bring uniformity in all laws related to individual civil matters under the Uniform Civil Code, which discriminate on the basis of caste, religion and gender.”
UCC has been on the BJP agenda at the national level for many years. But the party’s government in Uttarakhand became the first government to take concrete steps towards implementing it just before the Lok Sabha elections last year. Now, Uttarakhand’s UCC Act can serve as an ideal for other BJP ruled states to enact a similar law.
The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code before the 2022 assembly elections in Uttarakhand was a major commitment of the BJP, under which the party came to power for the second consecutive time.
The State Cabinet has recently approved the rules and regulations for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code and has empowered the Chief Minister to fix the date for this. Dhami started the new year with the promise to implement it in January itself.
Dhami said on the New Year’s day, “We are celebrating 2025 as the silver birth anniversary year of becoming a state of Uttarakhand. It will be a year of big achievements. We have fulfilled our promise to bring the Uniform Civil Code. We are applicable in January. do.”
He had said, “Gangotri of the Uniform Civil Code will come out of Uttarakhand and spread to the rest of the country.”
The objective of the UCC is to establish the same and similar rules on marriage, divorce, succession and heritage for all citizens of the state (except for Scheduled Tribes), irrespective of their religion. This makes all marriages and registration of live-in relationship mandatory.
