New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu, who is visiting India, at Hyderabad House in Delhi. During this period RuPay card was launched in Maldives. Modi and Muizzu witnessed Maldives’ first transaction through RuPay card. Modi said, in the coming times, work will be done to connect India and Maldives with UPI also. Along with this, both the leaders together virtually inaugurated the runway of Hanimadhoo International Airport in Maldives.

During this, Prime Minister Modi said that relations between India and Maldives are centuries old. India is Maldives’ closest neighbor and close friend. Maldives also has an important place in our Neighborhood First Policy and Sagar Vision. Modi said, India has always played the role of first responder for Maldives.

Be it meeting the needs of essential commodities for the people of Maldives, providing drinking water during natural disasters or providing vaccines during Covid, India has always fulfilled its responsibility of being its neighbour. Modi said, today we have inaugurated the redeveloped Hanimadhu Airport. Now, the Greater Male Connectivity Project will also be expedited. Support will also be provided in the development of a new commercial port in Thilafushi. Apart from this, more than 700 social housing units built with the cooperation of India were also handed over today.

Muizzu said, I am grateful for the decision of the Government of India to provide assistance of Rs 30 billion in addition to the bilateral currency swap agreement of US $ 400 million.
