There was a lot of ruckus between the student organizations at Kerala University, after which the police used force.

Thiruvananthapuram: After the results of the ‘Senate’ election at Kerala University, there was a violent clash in student organizations on Thursday. According to reports, there was a lot of uproar between the Congress -backed Kerala Students Union i.e. KSU and Marxist Communist Party of Federation of India i.e. SFI workers. The seriousness of the situation can be gauged from the fact that after the clash, there was a tense situation at the university headquarters for several hours. Police had to lathi -charge to control the situation, in which many students were injured.

Conflict started during counting process

The effect of violence between student organizations spread to the surrounding roads of Palayam, which also affected the traffic system. Views broadcast on TV channels saw incidents of stone pelting inside and outside the campus. According to sources, the struggle started as the tension increased during the counting process. In the results, SFI captured 6 out of 7 general seats, while KSU won the post of Vice President in the University Union. After this the violence erupted and spread to the MLA hostel, where there was a fierce stone pelting between the two groups. The protesters also blocked the road in front of the university during this period.

KSU and SFI accused each other

Both student organizations have accused each other for violence. KSU claims that the SFI workers became violent after the defeat to the posts of the major ‘Senate’ and the Students’ Council. At the same time, SFI alleged that the KSU workers started throwing stones from outside the campus and provoked the violence. Both sides also accused the police of bias. KSU said that the police along with SFI lathi -charged their workers, while SFI claimed that one of his protesters Dhanesh suffered an injury from the police helmet, causing bleeding from his head. During the counting of votes, SFI and KSU activists were protesting inside the campus.

A large number of policemen were deployed

KSU state president Alicius Xavier said that for the first time in 20 years his organization contested all seats and won 4 seats, including the ‘Senate’ posts. He alleged that SFI spread violence in a undemocratic manner to thwart the election. On the other hand, SFI leader Shivprasad said that KSU and Youth Congress members pelted stones from outside, after which the police lathi -charged their workers on the campus. At the same time, the cantonment police said that the investigation of the case is going on and a large number of police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order in the area.
