The New Democratic Party (NDP) and its leader Jagmeet Singh have suffered heavy losses in the 2025 federal elections in Canada. The party’s seats were reduced to single digits, which also had to lose the status of the official party. Earlier, NDP had 25 seats, but now it could not even cross the minimum figure of 12 seats. This means that the party will get less representation in Parliament, there will be a decrease in parliamentary funding and the time to speak in the House of Commons will also be limited.
At the same time, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has won the election and he is going to form a minority government. In this victory, US President Donald Trump’s aggressive stance towards Canada and business tension has also been a big hand. The Liberal Party required 172 seats for the majority, while they got 165 seats, which would require an alliance.
After the election results, Jagmeet Singh announced his resignation from the party leadership, although he also stated that he would continue in the post till the appointment of an interim leader. He said, “We do not give up until we believe that we cannot dream of a better Canada.”
There are many reasons behind this defeat of NDP. Conservative party leader Pierre Poilire and Liberal Party leader Mark Carney attracted voters who traditionally voted for NDP. In addition, Jagmeet Singh’s pro -Khalistan image and questions on his leadership also damaged the party’s image.
Jagmeet Singh took over the NDP in 2017 and became the first Sikh leader of a major Canadian party. His leadership style and political outlook gave him a unique identity, but in recent years his decisions and statements weakened the party’s position.
This election result has taken a new twist in Canadian politics, where the Liberal Party is returning to the lead role once again and the NDP will have to work hard to get its lost land back.
