Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took an important step on June 6, 2025 and invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 Summit to be held in Kananaskis, Alberta on 15–17 June. Carney told the media on Friday that India, which is the fifth largest economy in the world and the most populous country, should be on the G7 table due to its central role in global supply chains.
He described India’s participation on issues like energy, security and artificial intelligence as “necessary”. The invitation came in India-Canada relations despite the tension arising after the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. At that time, the then Canadian PM Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the murder, which India rejected as “absurd”. Carney said that both countries have agreed to continue dialogue on law enforcement, and “progress” on the issue.
PM Modi congratulated Carney’s recent election victory on X and accepted the invitation and said that India and Canada, who are lively democracy, will work together on the basis of mutual respect and shared interests. However, some Sikh organizations in Canada, such as the World Sikh Organization, criticized the invitation, described it as “betrayal of Canadian values”.
Conversely, expert Veena Nadjibulla said that other G7 countries supported India’s participation, as India is important for global strategic partnership. The car gave the invitation after consulting other G7 countries, which recognizes India’s economic strength and global impact. This step is a positive sign of improving India-Canada relations, although tension on the Khalistani issue continues.
