Caste census report in Karnataka launched new debate, recommendation to get OBC reservation 51%

An important report has come out in Karnataka amidst the political fierce battle over caste census across the country. In this report, it has been recommended to increase the existing 32 per cent reservation for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) to 51 per cent. The report was presented in the Karnataka cabinet headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Government sources gave this information on Saturday.

According to sources, the socio-economic and academic survey shows that the OBC population in the state is 70 per cent. The report suggested that OBCs should get 51 percent reservation in educational institutions. For this, models of Tamil Nadu (69 per cent) and Jharkhand (77 per cent) have been cited. The total population of OBC has been stated to be 4,16,30,153.

Whose population is the most

Citing the report, sources said that the population of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes is 1,09,29,347 and 42,81,289 respectively. According to the survey report, the population of backward communities in Category 1A is 34.96 lakh, 1 B- 73.92 lakh, 2A-77.78 lakh, 2B- 75.25 lakh, 3A-72.99 lakh and the population of backward communities in category 3B is 1.54 crore.

Dispute on report

The controversy over this report in Karnataka has deepened. Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities have demanded to dismiss it as “unscientific” and “biased”. He says a new survey is needed. This report was submitted by the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission to the Chief Minister on 29 February. The Chairman of the Commission K.K. The survey prepared under the leadership of Jayaprakash Hegde is based on the data of 2014-15.
