CDS General Rawat's death: Committee cites 'human error' as the cause of helicopter crash

A parliamentary committee constituted to investigate the death of the country’s first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, in its report has cited human error as the reason behind the Mi-17 V5 helicopter crash that occurred on December 8, 2021.

General Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and several other armed forces personnel were killed when their military helicopter crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu.

In a report tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, the Standing Committee on Defense shared data on the number of accidents involving Indian Air Force aircraft that occurred during the 13th Defense Plan period.

There were a total of 34 accidents, including nine IAF aircraft in 2021-22 and 11 aircraft accidents in 2018-19. The report has a column titled ‘Cause’ in which the cause of the accident is attributed to ‘human error’.
