Chandigarh Mayor Election: BJP's Harpreet Kaur Babla's victory in Chandigarh Mayor election, AAP-Congress is a big shock

New Delhi. The Bharatiya Janata Party has registered a major victory in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Mayor election. BJP candidate Harpreet Kaur Babla defeated Aam Aadmi Party candidate Prem Lata. BJP got 19 votes in the election, while Prem Lata got 17 votes. 36 votes were cast in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, out of which BJP had 16 councilors, but got 19 votes. This means that AAP and three Congress councilors carried out cross voting. Aam Aadmi Party has 13 councilors in the municipal corporation and 6 Congress councilors. In such a situation, the alliance had a majority, but despite this, the BJP won.

The election results were announced by the presiding officer Ramanik Singh Bedi. The polling started on Thursday at 11:20 am and ended at 12:19 pm.

Election held on Supreme Court order

AAP leader Kuldeep Kumar filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding a fair election. He requested the court to appoint a retired judge of the High Court as an observer to monitor the election. After this, the Supreme Court appointed retired judge Jayashree Thakur as supervisor, under whose supervision elections were concluded.

Last time there was a dispute

Significantly, there was a dispute in the Chandigarh Mayor elections last year too. The matter reached the Supreme Court. On 20 February 2024, the Supreme Court questioned the conduct of Election Officer Anil Christ and overturned the election result. In fact, Anil Christ had canceled eight AAP-Congress votes, which won the BJP candidate. However, the Supreme Court overturned the decision and declared Kuldeep Kumar of the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress as the mayor.
