Child pulled out from borewell after 16-hour rescue operation in MP's Guna, admitted to hospital

A 10-year-old boy, who fell into a 140-feet deep borewell in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district, was pulled out and taken to hospital on Sunday after a 16-hour rescue operation.

A boy named Sumit Meena fell into an open pit of a borewell at around 5 pm on Saturday evening in Pipliya village of Raghogarh assembly constituency, 50 km from Guna district headquarters.

Officials said he was taken out around 9.30 am on Sunday. Guna Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Sinha told PTI that the boy was taken to a hospital in Raghogarh on life support system.

When asked whether the child was responding, the officer said only doctors would be able to give information about it.

Raghogarh Congress MLA Jaivardhan Singh told PTI over phone from the spot that rescue workers worked through the night and tried to reach the boy by digging a parallel pit between the crater and the borewell.

Guna Collector Satendra Singh said on Saturday that the boy was trapped at a depth of 39 feet in the borewell, which is about 140 feet deep.

He told that there was no water in the borewell, hence no cover was put on it. Late Saturday evening, the NDRF team reached there from Bhopal and helped in the operation.

On Saturday evening, when the child’s family did not see him for a long time, they became worried. A local person said that when the child was searched, they came to know that he had fallen into the borewell.
