Supreme Court
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Central Government on a PIL seeking to include the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in the CAG selection panel. This petition was also linked with a petition already filed on the same case. The petition, filed by NGO Central for Public Interest Litigation, opposed the current system of appointment of CAG by recommendation of the Prime Minister. The petition demanded the formation of an independent panel for the appointment of CAG. In this panel, there has been a demand to include the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition and Chief Justice of India.
How is the appointment of CAG?
The current system has been criticized in the petition, in which CAG is appointed only on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. The petition claimed that this process gives rise to transparency and lack of fairness and should be operated by an independent and fair panel. The petition sought the formation of an independent panel for the selection of CAG, which includes the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice of India (CJI). The formation of this panel will ensure that the appointment of CAG is free and transparent.
Calling reply from central government
The Supreme Court has summoned a reply from the Central Government, adding a petition already filed on the matter. Earlier, instead of setting up a panel or selection committee for the appointment of CAG, the government had made a system to hand over it on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. This system has also been under question by the opposition and other political parties, as it has been called biased in favor of the government.
Following this petition, the Supreme Court’s move is being seen towards an important political and administrative reform. The demand to create an independent panel for the appointment of CAG is expected that this institution will be more fair and effective in the supervision of government expenditure.
